Where to start

New to Google Sheets? Open the Lessons tab and begin with Spreadsheet basics and Shortcut basics: they cover cells and ranges, entering data, your first formulas and functions, and the keyboard moves you'll use every day. Every exercise links back to the lessons it builds on.

Practicing in Google Sheets

Click Practice file under any lesson to download an .xlsx, then in Google Sheets choose File β†’ Import β†’ Upload. The sample data lands on its own tab together with a Task tab.

Excel vs Google Sheets: key differences

  • Array formulas: Sheets uses ARRAYFORMULA(); Excel 365 spills arrays automatically.
  • QUERY: Sheets-only SQL-like function. Excel's closest equivalent is Power Query, or FILTER + SORT + GROUPBY.
  • Regex: REGEXMATCH, REGEXEXTRACT and REGEXREPLACE are built into Sheets.
  • SORT order: Sheets uses TRUE/FALSE; Excel uses 1/-1.
  • Open ranges: Sheets accepts A2:A to mean "from A2 to the bottom".
